CLUB NEWS -- DECEMBER

December 4, 2017

Our 22 athletes have come to each practice focused and motivated to learn and get better. As club director, I am extremely pleased with our athletes attitudes and demeanor towards learning, and in encouraging and supporting one another. SWVC is trying to build a positive learning culture where athletes are encouraging, caring, and supportive of one another. In our first week, we have seen our older athletes support and encourage our younger athletes.

We are just one week into the season and we can already see our athletes improving. Our athletes have been working hard to learn new ideas and concepts as well as pushing themselves physically during our training sessions. We have already made some major breakthroughs on the court.

December is here and Christmas break is around the corner. Our practice times for the month of the December tend to be a bit random and infrequent due to various events taking place at Southwestern High School. Our practices will go back to 3 days a week at the start of the New Year.

When we do not have practice, especially during weeks that we are not practicing three days, I encourage our athletes to spend at least 15 minutes doing volleyball activities. Coach Brown will supply SWVC athletes with a list of activities that can be done at home.

November Highlights:

  • We were able to secure the majority of our equipment and start our practices off on the right foot. Our athletes love having their own volleyball and the variety of colors makes practice lively and animated.
  • We had a film session on November 30th before practice. The goal of this film session was to show our athletes the very same coaching videos that Coach Brown has been studying. This was done to reinforce coaching points and to learn from the source. During this film session, topics that were discussed and observed were passing, setting, and defensive movement. We had about 15 athletes at our film session! SWVC plans to hold 1-2 film sessions per month with a variety of different focuses ranging from volleyball skills, concepts, ideas as well as training our athletes to think like champions and leadership training.
  • The ACCUSPIKE hitting machine has been ordered! This will lead to major gains in our attack and more specifically will help train our athletes to take a longer, more aggressive approach when attacking the ball.
  • Tournament registration has started. Please refer to the Tournament Schedule page for updates and for any changes that may have been made to the tournament schedule.
